Your Host -- the Michigan Firehouse Museum, in Ypsilanti, Michigan

The Michigan Firehouse Museum is located in an original firehouse constructed in 1898, and used by the City of Ypsilanti Fire Department until 1975. The historic fire station was purchased by the Weaver family in 1998 and was incorporated as a 501c3 in 2000. In 2002 the museum was expanded by the addition of a 10,000 square foot wing, which now houses a variety of rotating historic fire apparatus. The Michigan Firehouse Museum’s current exhibits focus on the history of firefighting in the state of Michigan and firefighting technology with a special emphasis on Ypsilanti because of our historic building location. Plans are underway for the development of additional educational programs and children’s exhibits focusing on fire safety and prevention. The museum is still collecting firefighting equipment and related archival materials and our collections currently include fire truck, extinguishers, bells, helmets, toys and more. Some of the Michigan Firehouse Museum’s collection includes apparatus from the colonial period until the 1980s. We also house 25 bells, 50 apparatus, 100 lights and sirens, 200 pieces of Smokey the Bear memorabilia and over 300 fire engine name plates.
